How Goregaon's Changing Skyline Is Changing What Families Need in a Mandir

Goregaon has transformed over the last decade. The area that was once known primarily for Film City and Aarey Colony now has some of Mumbai's most ambitious residential projects Oberoi Splendor, Oberoi Exquisite, Lodha The Park, Hubtown Sunstone, and dozens of premium towers along the Western Express Highway. Alongside these, the older residential pockets around Goregaon station, Bangur Nagar, Jawahar Nagar, and Oshiwara still have a strong family presence in mid size apartments and independent houses.

This mix means we design very different mandirs for different Goregaon homes. Here is what works where:

Premium High Rise Apartments (Oberoi Garden City, Lodha, Film City Road) These apartments typically have 3 to 4 BHK layouts with spacious living areas, high ceilings (9.5 to 10 feet), and contemporary interiors designed by professional architects. The mandir in these homes needs to be both a spiritual centrepiece and a design element that complements the overall aesthetic.

  • Floor standing mandirs with 3D dome shikhars (5 to 7 feet tall): These are our most requested designs for premium Goregaon apartments. The dome is manufactured from thermoformed Corian heated and shaped into a smooth, seamless curve that is impossible to achieve with wood or marble. Multi layer LED backlighting inside the dome creates a warm, ethereal glow. Round or square pillars on either side frame the deity area, and the base includes concealed storage drawers for puja essentials.

  • Full pooja room installations: Many 3 to 4 BHK apartments in these complexes have a small dedicated pooja room (typically 4x4 or 5x5 feet). We design wall to wall Corian installations for these rooms the mandir as the centrepiece with a 3D shikhar, side panels with CNC carved motifs (Om, Gayatri Mantra, lotus, peacock your choice), a raised chabutara (platform) at the base, and ceiling integrated LED downlighting. The result is a complete devotional environment, not just a standalone piece of furniture.

  • Mandirs with pocket doors or sliding doors: In open plan living rooms where the pooja area is visible from the dining or entertainment space, many families prefer a mandir with doors they can close for a clean, minimal look. Our pocket doors slide completely into the mandir frame they disappear when open, and when closed, the mandir looks like a sleek Corian panel. The door tracks are German engineered for silent, smooth operation.

Mid Size Apartments (Bangur Nagar, SV Road, Goregaon Station Area) The residential societies around Goregaon station and along SV Road are older, built in the 1980s and 90s. Apartments here are typically 1 to 2 BHK, and space is the primary constraint. But families in these homes often have the strongest daily puja traditions many have been performing morning and evening puja for decades using wooden mandirs that are now showing their age.

  • Wall mounted Corian mandirs (2 to 3 feet wide): Our most popular design for compact homes. Mounts flush against any wall at eye level using concealed steel brackets takes zero floor space. Includes a shelf for deity placement, a small tray for daily puja items (diya, agarbatti holder, kumkum), and an LED backlit panel behind the main surface. The entire unit weighs 15 to 25 kg depending on size, so it does not stress the wall.

  • Corner fit designs: If you have an unused corner between two walls even a narrow one we can manufacture an L shaped Corian mandir that fits exactly into that space. This is one of our most space efficient designs, and it creates a dedicated sacred corner without blocking any walkway or furniture placement. We measure the exact corner angle and wall dimensions at your home before manufacturing.

  • Replacing old wooden mandirs: This is the most common request from Bangur Nagar and older Goregaon societies. The family has used a wooden mandir for 15 to 20 years. It now has termite damage, permanent turmeric or oil stains, and the finish has dulled. We measure the exact space where the old mandir sits and design a Corian replacement that fits the same footprint no civil work, no wall modifications, no repainting needed. The new Corian mandir goes into the same spot, but it will never stain, never get termites, and never need re polishing.

Independent Houses and Bungalows (Jawahar Nagar, Aarey Road Area) Some parts of Goregaon, particularly towards Jawahar Nagar and the Aarey Colony side, still have independent bungalows and row houses with more generous floor plans. These homes allow for larger, more elaborate mandir installations.

  • Grand floor standing mandirs (6 to 8 feet tall): With full traditional architecture multi tier dome, carved pillars with elephant or lotus motifs, a raised platform with steps, multiple deity shelves at different heights, and 360 degree LED backlighting. These are our flagship pieces and take 5 to 6 weeks to manufacture.

  • Full room pooja installations: For homes with a dedicated pooja room of 6x6 feet or larger, we build complete Corian environments back wall panel running floor to ceiling, the mandir as the centrepiece, side alcoves for smaller deities, a marble look Corian platform at the base, concealed storage underneath, and a custom LED lighting scheme (warm white for daily puja, colour changing RGB for festivals). The room becomes a self contained temple.

The Material: Why We Use Corian and What It Means for Your Home

After 50 years of manufacturing mandirs, we have worked with every material teak wood, Sagwan, rosewood, marble, MDF, plywood with laminate, acrylic, and Corian. Each has its place, but for Mumbai homes specifically, Corian outperforms everything else. Here is an honest assessment based on our experience:

Mumbai's Climate Destroys Wooden Mandirs This is not an opinion it is physics. Mumbai's relative humidity stays between 60 to 85 percent for eight months of the year and spikes above 90 percent during the June to September monsoon. Wood is hygroscopic it absorbs and releases moisture with humidity changes. In Goregaon's climate, this means:

  • Joints in wooden mandirs loosen within 3 to 5 years as the wood repeatedly swells and shrinks.

  • Surface polish (melamine or PU) develops hairline cracks, allowing moisture to penetrate the wood underneath.

  • Termites are endemic in Mumbai even chemically treated wood is vulnerable. Annual pest control costs Rs 2,000 to 5,000, and it does not guarantee protection.

  • Turmeric (haldi), kumkum, and puja oil permanently stain wood. The area around the deity platform develops a yellowish brown discolouration within 2 to 3 years that no amount of cleaning can remove.

Why Marble Doesn't Work for Apartments Marble is beautiful and traditional, but it has serious practical limitations for apartment living:

  • A marble mandir of reasonable size (4 to 5 feet tall) weighs 400 to 800 kg. Transporting it to the 15th floor of an Oberoi tower requires a freight elevator and 4 to 5 workers. Many buildings will not allow it due to floor load concerns.

  • Marble is porous ghee, oil, and flower pigments seep in and create permanent marks that even professional polishing cannot fully remove.

  • Marble chips and cracks during transport. One accidental bump against a door frame can cause irreparable damage.

  • Design limitations marble cannot be thermoformed into 3D curves, cannot have integrated LED backlighting, and cannot achieve the seamless joints that Corian offers.

What Makes Corian the Right Choice Corian is an engineered solid surface material a blend of natural minerals (alumina trihydrate, derived from bauxite ore) and acrylic polymer. Originally developed by DuPont for hospital and laboratory surfaces where hygiene is critical, it has properties that happen to be perfect for mandirs used in daily puja:

  • Completely non porous surface: Nothing penetrates. Turmeric, kumkum, oil, camphor residue, flower stains, ghee everything wipes clean with a damp cloth. After 10 years of twice daily puja, the surface looks identical to day one. This is the single most important advantage for a mandir material.

  • Zero maintenance in Mumbai humidity: Corian does not absorb or release moisture. It does not swell, shrink, warp, crack, or develop fungus regardless of whether it is June monsoon or December winter. No seasonal maintenance, no re polishing, no pest treatment. Ever.

  • 100 percent termite proof: Corian is an inorganic material there is nothing for termites to feed on. This alone saves Rs 2,000 to 5,000 per year in pest control costs that wooden mandir owners spend.

  • Fire resistant: Diyas, agarbatti, dhoop families light these daily. Corian does not catch fire and does not emit toxic fumes when exposed to heat. For homes with young children, this is a critical safety advantage over wood and MDF.

  • Thermoformable for 3D designs: This is what makes Corian unique among all mandir materials. When heated to a specific temperature, Corian becomes pliable and can be shaped into smooth 3D curves domes, arches, pillars, spires, and deity alcoves. Once cooled, it holds the shape permanently. This is how we create the elaborate temple architectures that are impossible with flat marble slabs or rigid wood.

  • Seamless joints: Corian pieces are bonded using a chemical process that creates an invisible, molecularly fused joint. Run your finger across it you cannot feel it. No gaps, no seams, no crevices where dust, moisture, or insects can collect. The entire mandir surface is one continuous, hygienic piece.

  • Translucent variants for LED backlighting: Certain Corian formulations allow light to pass through the material itself. We use this to create backlit Om symbols, deity silhouettes, mandala patterns, and full panel illumination. The LEDs we install are rated for 50,000 plus hours that is over 15 years of use at 8 hours daily. The lighting effect is subtle and devotional, not harsh or commercial.

  • Lightweight compared to marble: A Corian mandir weighs 60 to 80 percent less than an equivalent marble piece. It fits in a standard apartment elevator, can be carried by 2 people, and places minimal load on your floor slab important for high rise apartments.

  • Repairable: Minor scratches or scuffs from daily use can be buffed out with fine grit sandpaper, restoring the original smooth surface completely. No other mandir material offers this.

  • 100 plus colour options: From pure white to marble look patterns, warm beige tones to dramatic dark shades. We bring physical colour swatches to your home so you can compare against your walls and flooring in natural light before committing.

Our Latest 2026 Designs

Our design language evolves every year based on what families are actually asking for. Here are the trends we are seeing in 2026, particularly from Goregaon customers:

  • Minimalist mandirs with maximum impact: Clean Corian surfaces with a single dramatic backlit element a 3D Om, a translucent Gayatri Mantra panel, or a geometric mandala. No ornate carving, no heavy decoration. The beauty comes from the material itself and the light passing through it. This style suits the contemporary interiors of Oberoi, Lodha, and other premium apartments.

  • Traditional with modern materials: Classical temple architecture dome, pillars, base platform, carved deity panels but executed in Corian instead of wood. You get the look and feel of a traditional temple with all the practical benefits of Corian. This is our most popular category across all Goregaon home types.

  • Mandirs with integrated storage: Practical designs with pull out drawers for puja items, concealed cabinets below the main mandir, and dedicated slots for agarbatti holders, diya trays, and kumkum containers. Families with daily puja routines love these because everything is organised and within reach.

  • Compact wall mounted with big presence: For 1 to 2 BHK homes where floor space is precious. We design wall mounted units that pack maximum visual and spiritual impact into a 2x2.5 foot footprint layered Corian panels creating depth, LED backlighting for ambiance, and a carefully proportioned shelf arrangement for deity placement.
