Acrylic Mandir with Floating Shelves

This acrylic mandir takes a different approach to a home altar: no doors, no box — just a floor-standing frame with a jaali backplate and a run of floating shelves for arranging multiple idols, framed photographs of elders, small diyas, and festival items. The centre shelf carries the main idol; the shelves above and below hold the supporting cast. Built at 5ft x 2.5ft x 1.5ft as standard and fully customisable. Suitable for families who treat the pooja space as a living display rather than a closed cabinet. Hand-finished by Satguru Creations in our Mumbai factory — running since 1975, with 10,000+ mandirs delivered across India and four continents of export.

Design theme and style fit

The open floating-shelf format fits four specific interiors well: (1) contemporary Indian home — because multiple deity frames and photos of elders can be arranged together rather than hidden; (2) modern villa pooja corner — a jaali backplate throws lattice light during aarti; (3) Gujarati-Marwari family home — where the cultural use pattern involves many framed photographs of departed family alongside deities; (4) designer rental flat — because no wall fixing is needed, the piece stands and moves independently. Open display, not closed storage — that is the positioning.

Craftsmanship — floating shelf engineering

Floating shelves look simple but are the trickiest part to engineer correctly in acrylic. Each shelf on this unit is 12 mm cast acrylic cantilevered from a concealed steel bracket bonded into the jaali backplate, rated to carry a full brass deity without visible deflection. The visible shelf edge is CNC-routed, hand-chamfered and polished so the under-edge is as clean as the top. The jaali backplate is CNC-cut from cast acrylic with the client's chosen motif, then hand-deburred along every inner cut so light passing through the fretwork is clean-edged. The full frame is machine-levelled at our Mumbai factory before crating — a shelf that sags even a degree looks wrong when idols are placed on it.

Material and finish

All visible surfaces are UV-stable cast acrylic — we specify the non-yellowing grade for this unit because open altars sit in daylight and diya-light continuously. The inner frame is 18 mm BWP plywood, fully sealed and acrylic-clad on every face so no ply edge is visible anywhere. Against marble this piece is far lighter for the same visual mass. Against timber it will not warp in Mumbai humidity. Against cheap PVC-acrylic sheet it holds clarity and gloss indefinitely. Our Corian range uses DuPont-grade solid surface — this acrylic line is the mid-market sibling from the same workshop and the same artisan hands.

Size specifications

The signature configuration is 60" W x 30" D x 18" H (the 5ft x 2.5ft x 1.5ft spec you see in the title), but five standard sizes are available and every dimension is customisable. Compact 36" W x 18" D x 54" H — small family display. Signature 60" W x 30" D x 18" H — floor-standing multi-shelf altar. Standard tall 48" W x 24" D x 72" H — dedicated pooja-room wall with three shelves stacked. Large 60" W x 30" D x 84" H — villa feature wall with five shelves. Temple-hall 72" W x 36" D x 96" H+ — community or large-family scale. Number of shelves is always specifiable (three to seven shelves are common). Acrylic thickness 12 mm on shelves, 10 mm on the jaali backplate.

Customisation — what you can change

  • Acrylic colour: glacier white, warm ivory, pearl grey, frost-translucent, or smoked bronze.
  • Jaali backplate motif: trellis, lotus, peacock, om geometry, swastik, or custom family motif.
  • Shelf count: three to seven floating shelves, freely distributed.
  • Deity platform: raised central shelf for the main idol, or flat equal-height shelves.
  • Lighting: warm-white LED strip behind the jaali backplate, dimmable, festival RGB optional.
  • Finish: high-gloss, satin matte, or mirror-acrylic on the backplate.
  • Plinth: 4" floor-standing plinth or wall-mounted floating base.

Space suitability

Family living-room shrine: the signature 60" x 30" x 18" configuration seats along a wall and carries multiple deities plus elder-photos in one visual grouping. Designer villa pooja room: the tall 48" x 24" x 72" spec with five floating shelves and a lit jaali backplate becomes the anchor of the room. Apartment pooja corner: the compact 36" variant fits into a 2-BHK corner without crowding. Export USA / UK homes: because the frame is modular and acrylic-and-plywood, the export shipping weight is manageable; overseas clients who want a shrine rather than a cabinet choose this layout. Compact 1-BHK: the smallest spec wall-mounted at chest height adds a pooja function to a studio flat.

The process — consult to install

  1. Consult on WhatsApp (+91 83693 35359) — share wall photos, deity count and shelf preference.
  2. Design — 3D render and acrylic swatch within 48 hours. Two revisions included.
  3. Quote — fixed all-in price including delivery and install in India (or crate + export freight for overseas).
  4. Manufacture — CNC cut and hand-finished at our Mumbai workshop. Lead time 10–15 working days.
  5. QC — multi-point check: shelf level, jaali edge smoothness, backplate bond, finish inspection.
  6. Despatch — corner-padded crate. Pan-India 3–7 days; export 14–25 days sea or 5–8 days air.
  7. Install — white-glove install in India; numbered-parts flat-pack and video for exports, backed by WhatsApp video support.

Why Satguru Creations

The family business was founded in 1975 as Mumbai's first Corian mandir maker. This acrylic line is run by the same senior artisans in the same workshop — the only change between an acrylic and a Corian unit is material, not process and not quality control. 10,000+ mandirs delivered, 4.8/5 from 291 verified reviews, lifetime consultation guarantee on every unit, export to USA, UK, Canada, Australia and Europe. We are a factory making its own work, not a trading house.

Expertise

A floating acrylic shelf carrying a brass deity is an engineering problem, not just a finish problem. Our bracketing system was designed in-house by an architect-engineer team trained in Vastu and modern furniture statics. Cutting and polishing is done by six senior artisans, each with 15–30 years on acrylic and Corian. A licensed electrician vets any lighting circuit before despatch. Three generations of one family, one Mumbai workshop, one standard.

Frequently asked questions

Q: How much weight can a floating shelf hold?
Each 12 mm cast-acrylic shelf on a concealed steel bracket is rated to carry a standard brass deity without visible deflection. We reinforce the central shelf for clients with large idols; just mention it during consult.

Q: Is acrylic different from Corian?
Yes, honestly. Corian is DuPont-grade solid surface, heavier and seamless. This unit is high-grade cast acrylic on a sealed plywood back-frame, lighter and more accessible. Same workshop, same artisans, different material.

Q: Will the acrylic yellow over time?
No. We use UV-stable cast acrylic specifically graded for non-yellowing. Cheap PVC-acrylic sheet goes cloudy within about 18 months, but this grade does not and is safe for years of open-altar diya use.

Q: Can I add or remove shelves later?
Yes. Extra shelves can be retrofitted to the jaali backplate by our team. Existing shelves can also be repositioned on a service visit within India; for export clients we ship the brackets with a fitting video.

Q: Is the jali backplate lit?
Optional. We can fit a warm-white LED strip behind the jaali so the fretwork throws a lattice of light onto the wall behind during evening aarti. Dimmable and festival-RGB modes are optional upgrades.

Q: Do you ship an open-shelf unit abroad safely?
Yes. The unit ships flat-packed with numbered parts and foam-block shelf protection. Over the years we have shipped open-altar units to USA, UK, Canada and Australia; the crate design is proven.
